3. Quick Wrap-up

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with helpful counselling tips which often draw from multiple sources or those which are not commonly accessed by busy healthcare providers serving the community.

Counselling Conundrum: "My child was just prescribed penicillin, but I am allergic. We should switch to something else just in case, right?"

Concise Conclusion: I completely understand your concern, however drug allergies are actually not inherited. We can still monitor for an allergy, as it's still possible (but not higher risk than normal), which would include rash, trouble breathing, facial swelling. If that happens, stop right away and seek medical attention.

Quick Wrap-up: Keep in mind that avoiding first line meds "just in case" usually means accepting trade-offs like more side effects, more antimicrobial resistance, and so on. We recommend drilling down on allergy concerns whenever possible and provide reassurance when risk is low.
