IN-PRACTICE EXAMPLE: RX CONSULTATION
RPh: Hi! Is this your first time using this medication?
Patient: Yes it is. What should I know about it?
RPh: What has (prescriber) told you?
Patient: Not too much.
RPh: What are we using it for?
Patient: I am having migraines.
RPh: Understood. This medication is called SUMATRIPTAN tablets, also known as IMITREX, and you're to take it (as directed); take with a glass of water, avoid food if you have nausea with your migraines, and do not crush this medication. It is called a vasoconstrictor, and it works to treat migraines by shrinking blood vessels. It can take 30-60 mins to see the full benefits. Some side effects may include drowsiness, tingling, flushing, and may cause rebound headaches if used too frequently., I see you are taking sertraline; it's very rare, but keep an eye out for something called serotonin syndrome, which often gives flu-like symptoms. . It lasts 2 hours, which means after this you can take one more dose. It can be stored at room temperature. Did you have any questions?
Patient: What is the highest usual dose for this medication for my condition, if my (prescriber) decides to increase it? Can it be used in children? How does this medication compare to other options available to me? I have bad kidneys, should I worry with this medication?
RPh: The highest dose is generally 200 mg, and it should not be used under 5 years old. This medication works quickly compared to other options. Fortunately, only liver disease is a condition with this medication.
Patient: Thank you for all that information! I think I feel informed to the point that I am comfortable taking it.
