2. Concise Conclusion: a straight-forward patient-friendly answer

3. Quick Wrap-up

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with helpful counselling tips which often draw from multiple sources or those which are not commonly accessed by busy healthcare providers serving the community.

Counselling Conundrum: "I just started a new eye drop called timolol, and I'm finding I have dizzy spells. Is this normal?"

Concise Conclusion: Since eye drops don't get into your system too much, usually, they don't cause side effects. However, timolol can slow your heart which can lead to dizziness. To minimize side effects, it's best to shut your eye for at least 1 minute after using the eye drop, which will prevent the medication from going into your system too much.

Quick Wrap-up: Eye drops leak to the nose via the tear duct (hence why you get stuffy when you cry), which then increases systemic absorption. We prefer to simply ask our patients to gently shut their eye after instilling an eye drop, but you could also recommend punctal occlusion (gently pressing on the tear duct).
