1. Counselling Conundrum: a real question from a patient

2. Concise Conclusion: a straight-forward patient-friendly answer

3. Quick Wrap-up

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with helpful counselling tips which often draw from multiple sources or those which are not commonly accessed by busy healthcare providers serving the community.

Counselling Conundrum: "My 6 year old came home from swim lessons with red, stinging eyes. She keeps rubbing them and says they sting. Does she need antibiotic drops?"

Concise Conclusion: No vision changes, no severe pain, and she can open her eye fine? This is chlorine irritation, not an infection. Rinse the eyes with copious water or saline, apply a cool compress, and use lubricating drops for comfort. No antibiotics needed.

Quick Wrap-up: Pool chlorine mixes with sweat, urine, and skin oils to form chloramines. These are the real irritant, and they disrupt the eye's tear film rather than infecting it. Symptoms are self-limited and settle within a day or two with supportive care alone. The exceptions here to conservative treatment are vision changes, severe or worsening pain, or an eye that won't open, all of which warrant a same-day assessment.
