1. Pictured Counselling Cue Card: a free sample of our counselling reference

2. Patient Consultation: exactly what a pharmacist may say to a patient picking up this medication, with formatting to show where the information is coming from on the cue card

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with an example of how a pharmacist may counsel a patient. Basic counselling tactics (e.g. showing the patient the labeled medication as you read it, having the patient repeat the information in their own words, double checking allergies, and so on) may not be depicted in the interest of keeping the content concise.

RPh: Hi! Is this medication new for you?

Patient: Yes.

RPh: Ok. What has (prescriber) told you?

Patient: They said it would help my mood.

RPh: Ok. This medication is called BUSPIRONE, also known as BUSPAR, and you'll take it (as directed), ideally with food, to help with absorption. Typically it's used for anxiety and depression, and works within 2-4 weeks. You may notice some side effects such as nausea, headache, and insomnia, but it's generally well-tolerated. Let us know right away if this becomes bothersome. It's also a good idea to speak with someone before you stop this medication, as you may feel unwell if you stop too quickly. Avoid all grapefruit products when taking this medication, as it stops the medication from leaving your systemThis medication may not be right for you if you take certain medications, such as diltiazem, and it may require lower doses if you develop problems with your liver or kidneys. Keep it at room temperature.

RPh: Did you have any questions?

Patient: Is this a high dose?

RPh: Your dose is 5 mg, and some patients may require up to 60 mg, but it's best to start low and go slow to make sure you're doing well with it. This is a reasonable starting dose.

Patient: Thanks!
