1. Counselling Conundrum: a real question from a patient

2. Concise Conclusion: a straight-forward patient-friendly answer

3. Quick Wrap-up

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with helpful counselling tips which often draw from multiple sources or those which are not commonly accessed by busy healthcare providers serving the community.

Counselling Conundrum: "My friend says any inhaler that puffs needs to be shaken before using. Is this true? Mine is called Alvesco."

Concise Conclusion: This is a great thing rule of thumb! However, Alvesco does not need to be shaken (though it shouldn't hurt either), and there are a few other exceptions to this rule.

Quick Wrap-up: There are a few MDIs out there that do not need to be shaken; Alvesco, Atrovent, and QVAR are most notable. Of course, respimats technically "puff" and don't need to be shaken either. We don't want any possible inconvenience of having to shake it to get in the way of adherence; we have seen that even the smallest of details derail drug therapy.
