1. Counselling Conundrum: a real question from a patient

2. Concise Conclusion: a straight-forward patient-friendly answer

3. Quick Wrap-up

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with helpful counselling tips which often draw from multiple sources or those which are not commonly accessed by busy healthcare providers serving the community.

Counselling Conundrum: "Does it matter if I take my pantoprazole with or without food?"

Concise Conclusion: Pantoprazole generally works best if you take it 30 minutes before a meal, usually the first meal of the day, since it lasts all day.

Quick Wrap-up: Despite some references claiming some PPIs can be given without regard to food (this is based on limited evidence), most PPIs are more effective before a meal. This is because they work best when proton pumps are active, such as during a meal. Thus, we recommend our patients take all PPIs 30 mins before a meal. Like most counselling pearls, adherence is the goal, rather than struggling with perfect timing.
