1. Pictured Counselling Cue Card: a free sample of our counselling reference

2. Patient Consultation: exactly what a pharmacist may say to a patient picking up this medication, with formatting to show where the information is coming from on the cue card

Clearly, there are nuances that may not be captured in this format. The goal here is to provide you with an example of how a pharmacist may counsel a patient. Basic counselling tactics (e.g. showing the patient the labeled medication as you read it, having the patient repeat the information in their own words, double checking allergies, and so on) may not be depicted in the interest of keeping the content concise.

RPh: Hi! Is this your first time using this medication?

Patient: Yes, it's actually for my 4 year old.

RPh: What has (prescriber) told you?

Patient: They said it was for her ear infection.

RPh: Ok. This medication contains two ingredients called CIPROFLOXACIN/DEXAMETHASONE, also known as CIPRODEX, and you'll use it (as directed). It's in the family of what's called antibiotics and steroids, but basically it will kill bacteria as well as reduce inflammation caused by an outer ear infection. Give it a good shake every time before you use it. To start, wash your hands, warm the bottle between your hands to reduce stinging, then lie down with the affected ear face up, pull the ear back and downwards, and instill the drops. To ensure it's well-absorbed, be sure to stay lying down for a few minutes. You may notice that it leaks out when she gets up, but that's fine as long as she stayed lying down for a few minutes. After 2-3 days she should be better, otherwise I would return to (prescriber). Make sure you use it for the full (duration) even if it gets better before you're done. Once opened, it lasts 28 days. This medication will not work for viral or parasitic infections, and is generally safe unless you're using many steroids (creams, pills, etc.) all together and frequently. In this case, it could affect your immune system. Keep it at room temperature.

RPh: Did you have any questions?

Patient: No, I think that covers it!
